MY BIO

My name is Johann Amit, and I live in Sydney, Australia. I am a musician, songwriter, composer and recording artist.

I was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1954 and studied at Royal College, Colombo.

Music was always a big part of my life. My father Gazali Amit was a well-known musician in Sri Lanka during the 1950s and 1960s, as well as an electronics whiz. In 1972, I began working in my father's shop, where we repaired radios and hi-fi sound systems. We also designed and built PA systems for bands. This gave me the opportunity to learn both the technical and musical sides of the industry from my father.

I also played in my father's band for about 18 months, performing at the Blue Leopard Night Club and the Harbour Room Restaurant at the Hotel Taprobane in Colombo.

In 1974, I left Sri Lanka to join a band in Switzerland. It was my first trip overseas and an exciting and challenging experience. I toured with the band for four years, performing in Switzerland, West Germany, West Berlin, Norway and Denmark.

We played many genres of music, from songs of the 1950s through to the latest pop hits on the charts. We also accompanied cabaret artists at some of the most prestigious clubs in Switzerland. Those years were a wonderful experience and gave me many memories that I will always treasure.

In 1978, I migrated to Australia and formed my own band 'THE AMITS' with my two brothers and two sisters. We performed regularly at venues throughout Sydney, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, for approximately 24 years.

The band finally broke up in 2002. After so many years of performing, the physical demands of playing regularly had become too much. I then stepped away from music completely for 18 years. During that time, I did not sing or play an instrument.

Professionally, I worked in medical electronics for 16 years and later spent 24 years in the IT industry.

In 1998 I married my wife Sybil, she is from Colorado, USA.

Although I had stepped away from music for many years, there was one more goal I wanted to accomplish — to write and record my own music.

In February 2020, I finally began that journey. I set up a small recording studio at home and started writing, composing and recording my own music. I record original songs and covers, and I also turn 18 poems into songs for John F. Connor, an established grief poet from the UK.

I use Band-in-a-Box to create my own backing tracks, and I sing and record the vocals myself. It has been incredibly rewarding to be able to create music and share it with family, friends and post on social media.

I retired in May 2022 at the age of 68, which has given me even more time to concentrate on my music.

Today, I play finger style nylon string acoustic guitar. I no longer perform live and have no desire to return to live performance. My passion now is writing, composing and recording music in my home studio.

I currently have four albums available on Spotify and other streaming services, as well as YouTube. One of the albums featuring my very talented sister Nihara Loos.

After spending so many years away from music, I am grateful to have found my way back to it. Music has always been an important part of my life, and I believe that creating music is therapeutic. It keeps the mind active, creative and engaged.

I intend to continue writing, composing and recording for as long as my health permits.
